An extra large, open-top litter box will ensure that your large cat has enough space when using the litter box. An extra large litter box will also help keep the litter box clean rather than the litter being kicked out onto the floor.
These litter boxes all have an open top. An open top makes the litter box easily accessible for cleaning and for the cat to enter and exit. The measurements of each box are given below.

Reviews – Extra Large Open Top Litter Box
1. Petmate Giant

This litter box is called Giant because of its size. The measurements are 25.56 x 18.3 x 10.02 inches.
Some of you may remember another Petmate litter box called Giant also. It had two pockets at the front for storing accessories such as a litter scoop, small hand brush, rake or wipes. That particular box has not been available, but is now back in stock – The Petmate Giant Litter Pan for Cats. A little confusing as two of Petmate’s litter boxes are called Giant.
Interestingly, once the two pockets at the front are discounted in the litter box size, that box measured 27 x 17 x 10 inches. That is very little difference with the box being reviewed here. Do you really need the pockets at the front? That is a personal choice.
It holds up to 30lbs of litter if necessary. This is a lot of litter, however if your cat is large you need a lot of litter.
There is a non stick coating on this box. If it eventually wears off, give some of these methods a try – DIY non-stick coating on any litter box.
This box is blue or blue!
Pros
It has sloped sides so that the front edge is lower (6 1/2 inches approx) which is good for older cats to enter and exit the box easily.
The edges are rimmed which helps when lifting the box.
Cons
The front edge may be too high for kittens. In this case a booster step would work until the kitten grew.
Some cats pee over the lower front edge.
Specifications
The size is 25.56L x 18.3W x x10.2H inches. This litter box weighs 2.20 lbs. It is made from BPA free plastic. Blue is the only color choice.

2. Frisco High Sided Cat Litter Box – Extra Large 24-In
The surface is polished (the shine can be seen in the image), making it easy to clean. The open top and lower front make it easy to scoop and keep clean.
With a 10 inch rear wall, this box has had a good reaction from owners with high-peeing cats, unless they turn around and pee through the entrance. In that case, place the entrance facing a wall.
The plastic is BPA free and the box can be recycled.
There is no lid for this box. The box is sturdy and thick plastic,
It comes in two colors: gray and navy. One helpful review commented that the navy shows the dust from the litter, so if that is going to annoy you, gray is a better color choice.
Another excellent suggestion is to use a marker to draw a line on the box at the three-inch mark so that you can see at a glance how much litter needs to go into the box.
With very large boxes, the size can cause us to overfill the box when it is absolutely not necessary.
Pros
At 24 inches long, it has the tick of approval from a Maine Coon owner. The cat also happens to be a high pee-er.
This box has positive reviews regarding litter actually staying in the box and is recommended even if you do not have a super large cat.
Cons
The navy color shows the dust.
The cat may turn around and pee through the entrance.
Specifications
The measurements for the box are 24 X 18 X 10 inches. The height for the cat to step into the box is 6 inches. The box has a 10 inch rear wall. There are two color choices, gray and navy.

3. iPrimio Ultimate Stainless Steel Litter Box

This may be the first time you have considered a stainless steel litter box.
We have become so conditioned to plastic of one type or another. However stainless steel does makes perfect sense. Often our pets already have food bowls and water bowls that are stainless steel. I like the way I can get them super clean with a bit of a scrub when needed.
Plastic can absorb odors over time. Stainless steel will outlive plastic many times over.
Not contributing to landfill is a win win for me.
Size wise, it is not quite as large as the Petmate Giant. We are considering kitty size here, as well as any other attributes the litter box may have.
There is also a stainless steel for this box, surround that can be purchased separately. It fits onto the top of the box to make the box higher. This is good news for litter control.
Pros
Optional surround that makes the sides of the box higher.
Cons
Plastic can discolour and absorb odors over time.
Specifications
The measurements of this stainless steel litter box are 23.5 x 15.5 x 6 inches.
There is also an optional extra surround or enclosure to make the sides of the box higher. This can be purchased separately or as a set.

tips to help with choosing the best box for your large kitty
1. Measure the cat from his cute little nose to the base of his tail (not the end of his tail)
2. Have the measurements at hand of all the boxes you think may be suitable.
3. Measure the location where the box will be placed. If space is tight, make a paper pattern of the dimensions and fit it into the allocated space. Does it fit?
4. Nature’s Miracle Just For Cats Advanced High Sided Cat Litter Box
This litter box measures 23.4 x 18.25 x 11 inches making it slightly smaller than the Frisco box but is 11 inches high rather than 10 inches high so has the slight edge height wise.
The entrance is approximately 5 inches high, so it’s easy for the cat to exit and enter. The 5 inch entrance would possibly work for a large senior cat depending on the mobility of the cat. Older cats can also have trouble squatting, so higher sides are a plus once again.
This box is black, large, and has high sides.
Higher sides do also suit the needs of a large cat whose rear end may have problems with hanging over the sides of a box with lower sides. Using a box with higher sides solves this problem.
Pros
The box has an antimicrobial coating to prevent the growth of bacteria.
Suitable for multi-cat households.
Good for large senior cats as the front opening is not too high for seniors (unless there are mobility issues).
Cons
The litter may fall out of the lower edged front section of the box.
If your cat is a high peer and is not a senior, a box that has a higher front entry would be preferable, like the Petmate Giant.
Specifications
This litter box measures 23.4 x 18.25x 11 inches. The entrance is 5 inches high. The back height of 11 inches slopes down gently until it reaches 10 inches. The box is black. The bottom of the litter box is smooth.
If you are undecided about a box with or without a cover, this is a good place to start reading for some pros and cons of both types of litter boxes.
5. Van Ness High Sides Cat Litter Pan – Giant
There are two different sizes of Van Ness litter pans. The size being reviewed is the Giant size, measuring 21.25 x 17.75 x 9 inches.
For measurements of the large size, see the Specifications section below.
When clicking through to see more information about this litter box, please make sure that you select either the Large or the Giant to see the product you are interested in. It is easy to make an error with online shopping, as I did recently when I ordered two of the same product.
This box has very positive reviews, with a staggering 96% of the people who reviewed it also recommending it. With 9 inch high sides (apart from the front opening, which is 7 inches high), the litter stays mostly in the box.
Even if your cat is not overly large, it makes sense to get the giant box to keep litter confined and to allow the cat plenty of space to be able to turn around and around and around.
The corners of the box are rounded, making it easy to scoop.
The finish is polished to once again help with scooping and emptying the litter. The high-polished finish is also odor and stain resistant.
There is 20% recycled content in this product.
Pros
It is made in the USA.
Because the sides are high, litter scatter is reduced.
Cons
Although this pan is labelled “Giant,” it still may not be big enough for our cat. Some of the other boxes on this page are larger. Do the basic measurements first to avoid disappointment.
Specifications
This size is the Giant and measures 21.25 inches x 17.75 inches x 9 inches. If that is a little too large there is also a Large size. The measurements are 17.5 inches x 15 inches x 8.5 inches with a front step in opening of 6 inches.
No matter which box you choose, cleaning the litter box regularly is the key to having the cat use the box. This article has some great tips for litter box maintenance.
6. Nature’s Miracle Disposable Cat Litter Box
Yes, this is a disposable litter box, but it is very large, hence its inclusion in the list.
It makes a great temporary box if you are not yet sure what to get for a more permanent solution.
It’s also a good way to test the size dimensions to see how well they work for your cat. You will then know if the size is okay or if you do need a larger litter box. Just to note, this box is a smaller size than the Nature’s Miracle Box that is fourth on this list.
Some people do choose to use an extra large open-top litter box that is disposable, on a permanent basis.
If you have reduced mobility, perhaps relating to health or after surgery, these boxes are an excellent choice while you are unable to cope with a normal litter box.
This may be a temporary solution that works out much easier than coping with a regular box. The box can just be replaced rather than having to dispose of the litter and wash the box.
These disposable boxes can also be put inside traditional litter boxes, cat carry baskets, cages, play pens, and so on.
Pros
Excellent temporary solution to test the size
Excellent solution for those unable to manage a regular litter box.
Excellent solution for travelling.
Built-in baking soda provides protection from litter box and ammonia odors.
Cons
The original “white” boxes are viewed as being a much better quality than the newer “brown” boxes. May be advisable to see which product would be shipped.
Specifications
The measurements of this box are 21 x 14.5 x 8.375 inches. There are two litter boxes in the Jumbo size pack. Having two boxes gives you enough time to test the dimensions to then get a more permanent box. The box is eco friendly, made from paper and recycled materials. They are landfill safe according to the manufacturer.
Our Top Pick
We choose the Petmate Giant because of its size.
As large size and the open top are the main criteria for this litter box, this box is the clear winner.
- OPEN-TOP KITTY LITTER BOX: This large cat litter pan provides ample space for cats to do their business comfortably. The sloped style is great for older cats or kittens to access. Holds up to 30 lbs. of litter.
- KEEPS LITTER CONTAINED: The durable jumbo cat litter box features a wide base to keep mess contained within the pan for litter-free floors. The deeper design holds more litter for extended use & less frequent cleaning.
- Petmate: For over 50 years, we at Petmate are passionate about our dogs, cats & furry friends in general.
All of the boxes on this page are quality boxes and all were chosen with many positive features.
It may be that you are willing to compromise slightly on size if there is another feature you like. For example, Nature’s Miracle box is large but has a low opening at the front which would suit a cat with mobility issues.
We hope that we have been able to provide you with enough information to make the best choice for your large cat.
Is your cat elderly? Litter box requirements do change over time as the cat becomes less agile and needs easy entry and exit from the box.
